Standard Operating Procedure Cordless Jigsaw

Workplace Health and Safety has conducted a comprehensive job safety analysis for operating a cordless jigsaw, e.g. cutting timber materials and how to change a jigsaw blade with risk control measures developed for identified hazards per WHS hierarchy of controls.

  • WHS consultation with employees on health and safety matters to identify potential hazards with operating a cordless jigsaw and ensure cordless tool safety

  • WHS consultation and participation processes ensure adequate health and safety communication

  • Pre operational checks on equipment per cordless jigsaw inspection checklist, e.g. inspect cordless jigsaw and equipment, and cordless battery and charger are free from damage such as battery leaking fluid

  • Cordless battery charging using a cordless charging station shall be based on a cordless jigsaw manufacturers recommendation

  • Cordless tools and equipment, e.g. cordless jigsaw identified as damaged shall have an out of service tag placed on it with procedures for reporting faulty equipment in the workplace implemented

  • Safety guarding must be fitted to a cordless jigsaw where there is an exposed nip point. Only remove equipment guards for cordless tool storage

  • Do not alter or modify a cordless jigsaw, e.g. removal of safety mechanism will affect tool safety

  • Inspect jigsaw blade for signs of wear and damage per cordless jigsaw checklist, replace if necessary and dispose of damaged jigsaw blade appropriately

  • Cordless jigsaw operation per cordless jigsaw SOP focuses on WHS issues and implementing control measures to reduce the risk from equipment hazards

  • Workplace environmental hazards, e.g. confined space and working at heights

  • Working at height on ladders, aluminium mobile scaffold and elevated work platforms when using cordless jigsaw

  • Hazardous chemicals and hazardous products used in connection with cordless jigsaw usage

  • Hazardous manual tasks in connection with using a cordless jigsaw

  • Cordless jigsaw PPE, e.g. ppe for eye protection, protective work shoes, hearing protection, safety protective wear, respiratory personal protective equipment

  • Health and safety training for workers, e.g. cordless jigsaw training

  • Workplace housekeeping per housekeeping policy and procedures

  • Legislative and regulatory requirements for compliance with WHS legislation, e.g. work health and safety regulations, managing electrical risks at the workplace code of practice and power tool safety standards

  • Monitoring controls, e.g. assessment and review the effectiveness of control measures

  • Tasks and activities in connection with using a cordless jigsaw
