Cordless Blower Safe Operating Procedure

Workplace Health and Safety has conducted a comprehensive job safety analysis for leaf blower operations, e.g. operation of cordless blower with risk control measures developed for identified hazards per WHS hierarchy of controls.

  • WHS consultation with employees on health and safety matters to identify potential hazards with operating a leaf blower and ensure cordless tool safety

  • WHS consultation and participation processes ensure adequate health and safety communication

  • Pre operational checks on equipment per blower pre start checklist, e.g. inspect cordless blower vac and equipment, and cordless battery and charger are free from damage such as battery leaking fluid

  • Cordless battery charging using a cordless charging station shall be based on a cordless blower manufacturers recommendation

  • Cordless tools and equipment, e.g. cordless blower vacuum identified as damaged shall have an out of service tag placed on it with procedures for reporting faulty equipment in the workplace implemented

  • Leaf blower guard must be fitted to a cordless blower vacuum for protection from an exposed leaf blower fan

  • Do not alter or modify a cordless blower vacuum, e.g. leaf blower handle or leaf blower bag removal will affect tool safety

  • Inspect handle, shoulder strap and leaf blower bag for signs of wear and damage per tool safety checklist, replace if necessary and dispose of damaged handles, shoulder straps and leaf blower bags appropriately

  • Cordless blower operation per cordless blower SOP focuses on hazard control measures to reduce the level of risk

  • Workplace environmental hazard, e.g. confined space and working at heights

  • Working at height on ladders, aluminium mobile scaffold and elevated work platforms to operate cordless blower

  • Hazardous chemicals and hazardous products used in connection with operating a cordless blower vacuum
