The process of consultation shall assess the hazards generated as a result of having to change a deflated or punctured tyre on a motor vehicle and take into consideration:

  • Is it necessary to have to change the tyre;
  • Could an alternative means of changing the tyre be sought e.g. qualified person changing the tyre would pose less risk to a worker;
  • Is there a risk of the vehicle falling from a height onto the worker changing the tyre given the nature of terrain or ground surface intended to support the vehicle;
  • The method by which a tyre shall be changed given the type of vehicle. Consideration should be given the manufacturers recommendations;
  • Method of fitting a spare wheel to the vehicle and lowering the vehicle safely to the ground when the tyre has been changed
  • Environmental hazards and risks to workers;
  • Are workers at risk of serious injury when changing a tyre on a vehicle;

  • Control measures as per the hierarchy of controls shall be implemented to prevent, or minimise a persons level of exposure to risk of death, serious injury or illness;
  • Workers undertaking the changing of a deflated or punctured tyre shall be trained as to any new control/s to be implemented and informed as to the hazard notification process should additional hazards be identified.
