Switchboard Installation SWMS

Electrical Switchboard Safety

The switchboard installation method statement assesses the risk following the hazard identification process connected with the switchboard installation and the subsequent implementation of risk controls to manage the risks.

  • Electrical SWMS safe work method statements require that hazard control methods be implemented per safety procedures for electrical works when installing an electrical switchboard.

Switchboard Installation Method Statement

Workplace Health and Safety has conducted a comprehensive hazard analysis for the switchboard installation, e.g. installing switchboard and panel boards with risk control measures developed for identified hazards per the hierarchy of controls.

  • Assess and review health and safety practices in the workplace to control risks

  • WHS consultation for the identification of hazards with the switchboard installation

  • Risk assessment to identify health and safety hazards in the workplace that may potentially pose an immediate threat of death or serious injury

  • Health and safety planning for electrical switchboard installation, e.g. minimise risks through the planning process

  • WHS consultation and participation processes ensure adequate health and safety communication

  • Workplace environmental hazards, e.g. work in a confined space, falling from heights

  • Trip hazards in the workplace resulting in injuries caused by slips trips and falls

  • Implementation of controls for the switchboard installation, e.g. isolation of hazards and services

  • Health and safety at work information for employees to manage risks

  • Electrical testing equipment used in the electrical switchboard installation

  • Insulated tools used in the installation of an electrical switchboard, e.g. electrical testing tools

  • Contact with energised electrical equipment resulting in electrocution, electrical burns and injuries from electrical shock

  • Electrical spotter to warn persons working in the vicinity of energised electrical equipment, e.g. electrical hazards

  • Visual inspection of switchboard installation to check electrical switchboard wiring, electrical switchboard components and ensure electrical and mechanical safety per electrical switchboard drawing

  • Electrical switchboard testing and energise electrical switchboard per electrical switchboard Australian Standard

  • Record the results of electrical switchboard testing for energised electrical equipment

  • Hazardous chemicals used in connection with switchboard installation

  • Hazardous manual tasks in connection with the installation of switchboard and panel boards

  • Personal protective equipment, e.g. safety equipment for electricians and electrical safety gear

  • Health and safety training for workers, e.g. electrical switchboard training

  • Workplace housekeeping incorporating material handling and storage system

  • Legislative and regulatory requirements for compliance with WHS legislation, e.g. code of practice for safe electrical work and health and safety standards

  • Monitoring controls, e.g. implement and monitor work health and safety practices

  • Electrician tasks and activities in connection with switchboard installation

Method Statement Electrical Installation Work

Safe work procedure for working on or near energised electrical equipment shall assess the risk of construction high-risk activities involved in switchboard installation.

High-risk work activities that may expose workers to WHS hazards are likely to include but not be limited to:

  • Working on or near live electrical equipment, e.g. electrical hazard

  • Implementing an isolation procedure for electrical equipment to ensure electrical equipment safety

  • Lockout electrical equipment

  • Testing electrical equipment per safe work procedure for electrical work

  • Use of electrical testing tools

  • Other electrical switchboard installation hazards
