  • Could an alternative means of cutting timber materials be used with less risk to the user;
  • Selection of chainsaw e.g. type, bar size, etc shall be dependant upon task to be performed;
  • Pre-operational inspection and fueling of a chainsaw;
  • Handling and operation of a chainsaw in the cutting of trees and timber materials;
  • Inspection of material to be cut for the identification of hazards e.g. foreign objects;
  • Working at heights, prevention of persons and chainsaw falling;
  • Location and voltage of overhead electrical services to be assessed, and where necessary isolated or de-energised whilst a chainsaw is operated within a designated exclusion zone;
  • Environmental hazards and risks to workers e.g. is there a path of escape;
  • Are persons at risk of serious injury when using a chainsaw to cut timber materials?

  • Control measures to eliminate or minimise the risk of death or serious injury to persons shall be developed in consultation with workers;
  • Control measures as per the hierarchy of controls shall be implemented to prevent, or minimise a persons level of exposure to risk of death or serious injury;
  • Workers operating a chainsaw in the performance of a task shall be trained as to the implementation of any new controls and informed as to the hazard notification process should additional hazards be identified.

Following the implementation of controls the risk should reduce to:
