NT WorkSafe

 Act  

NT WorkSafe - Department of Justice, Northern Territory Government administers and enforces the following Act:

A duty of care is imposed upon employers, persons in control of a workplace, employees, self-employed persons, building designers, manufacturers and suppliers of plant and substances and installers of plant to eliminate or minimise the risk of injuries to persons at or near a workplace.

NT WorkSafe administers, implements and enforces the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations which deal with the following administrative matters:

  • Incident reporting and notification;
  • Injuries, illnesses and dangerous events;
  • Registration of plant;
  • Training requirements;

 Codes of Practice  

NT WorkSafe codes of practice provide practical guidance and advice on how to achieve a standard required by the act and regulation.

Guidance

Guidance and advice in a code of practice is not legislation, it should be adopted unless a person chooses an alternative control measure or course of action that achieves an equivalent or better standard than that recommended in a code of practice.

  • Codes of practice are developed in consultation with employers, employees, industry and union representatives and government agencies.

A workplace matter that would require an employer, contractor or employee to make enquires would include but not be limited to a:

  • Radioactive Ores and Concentrates;
  • Dangerous goods;
